Jan 12th, India- EQ International, the leading Media Partner in India, hosted a webinar on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Solar Inverter Policy and Challenges. Mr. Honey Raza, Head of Sales for Solis India was invited as the key speaker to deliver insight to the industry about the challenges that Inverter manufacturers are facing due to BIS.

Introduction & Background: MNRE has mandatory requirements for solar inverters to have safety and anti- islanding standards and to be tested under IS 16221 (PART 2):2015/IEC 62109-2:2011 & IS 16169:2014/IEC 62116:2008. The latest extension regarding the BIS testing was implemented on 31 Dec 2020 and following this it would be mandatory to have BIS certified inverters for all Indian solar PV projects. As per the notification and guidelines, inverters from 1kW to 150kW which are 1000V are covered under BIS notification. Testing can be done at 8 notified labs by the BIS Organization.

Mr. B S Negi who is a Scientist at MNRE, delivered the keynote address. He has been spearheading the BIS process and framing the standards for this policy. Right from the start the policy has been framed under consultation with all the key industry stake holders... During the keynote address he explained about the vision and planning behind the regulation. The aim is to develop better infrastructure for testing and streamline the registration process. He further extended his future support for all the stakeholders for any challenges being faced at various points. They also recognized and appreciated Solis for being one of the few companies to get their inverters certified in India.

Honey Raza –Head of Sales for Solis India, appreciated the ongoing support extended by Mr. Anand, CEO of EQ Media for organizing such an event, especially the focused agenda on the rooftop solar PV segment. He pointed out various issues concerning the BIS registration process as well as the current and future implications. Some of the issues highlighted were:
1. More Labs required in 100kW to 200kW segment to increase from the existing 2 labs. This segment would attract more and more models for testing
2. Validity benefits of BIS certificate for the companies who have all completed the BIS registration early.
3. BIS applicability in tenders and standards followed by DISCOMS, State Nodal Agencies etc. This will prove an advantage for the BIS implementation and speed up the overall process.

Industry leaders seem satisfied with the interaction with BIS officials and expressed a keenness to continue to work together for improved policy framing and implementation moving forward.
